Gaming

Gaming at Necronomicon is a great way to spend downtime between panels and events, or your whole weekend. We offer a wide selection of games that can be checked out from the game library as well as our Play-To-Win games. Following the conclusion of gaming we also hold the Survivors Raffle where we give away free prizes for anyone who sticks out through the end of the convention.

Painting Contest

Open System Event

Supplies will be available within the gaming room for the entirety of library hours both Friday and Saturday.

This year will use an ‘Open System’ format. This system does not use as many categories one normally finds in most painting competitions. Instead of a focus on the subject matter being entered, the Open System focuses more on the type of modeling being presented.

The Open System is designed to recognize and reward modelers of all skill levels and is based on the conceptual goal that no deserving work should go home unrewarded.

Competition Rules and Regulations:

  • Must have a badge to enter.
  • No more than 2 entries per painter/modeler per division.
  • Entries must be made in-person by the painter/modeler and be the sole work of the individual whose name is represented on the entry form. Any entry painted/modeled by anyone other than the entrant will be disqualified.
  • Award winning models from previous contests, conventions, or online competitions may not be entered.
  • No painted models published prior to the Necronomicon 2024 competition in any professional print media or gaming material may be entered. Online publication of your model entry prior to this competition is acceptable only if done so in the spirit of receiving feedback on your work from the hobby community.
  • Entries will be photographed, and entry registration grants permission for Necronomicon to show them in all public media, including online and print media.
  • Necronomicon Staff, Necronomicon Competition Volunteers, and Competition Management cannot be held responsible for damaged or lost miniatures. We treat all models with respect and will do our very best to keep them safe.
  • Necronomicon Painting/Modeling Competition Management reserves the right to refuse any entry due to inappropriate content.
  • All decisions of the judges and management are final.
  • Entries must be received by 9 pm on Saturday of Necronomicon.
  • Entries must remain on display until after the Award Ceremony at 4:00 pm Sunday of the convention.

If an entrant designates a proxy to pick up their entry(s) and award(s), they must present the entrant’s Badge.

Entries and prizes must be picked up by 5 pm Sunday. If an entrant (or proxy) has not picked up their model(s) and awards(s) and all attempts to contact them fail by the end of the Survivors Raffle following the Convention – any awards will be forfeit and the entry(s) still in our possession will be added into the assets for the Gaming Department RPG Library.

Divisions

Paint-n-Take Division

This division is for any entry painted at our Paint-n-Take tables. This division will be judged similarly to our Painters Division, is only open to entries painted during the convention, and has separate awards from the other divisions.

Youth Division

Entries in this division must be 14 years old or under. Entries may be placed in any division that fits best. The judging of these exhibits take into account the entrant’s age, and their awards are separate. Young children may be judged separately.

Entry Size Limitation

Exhibits have a limitation on size. No entry may be larger than 24” cubed.

Awards

The Open System is less competitive in nature and the number of awards given are expandable, no piece wins an award at the expense of another. Each entrant’s work is individually evaluated and receives the level of award the judges feel that their work deserves.

There is no limit to the number of awards.

Best of Show

Best of Show is chosen by combined vote of judges and entrants. Each entrant is invited to cast one vote for their choice for Best of Show, not including their own entry. Judges each cast three votes for their choice. The number of judge votes may be reduced and will never amount to more than 50% of the total.

Best Displayer Award

Best Displayer Awards are for the imaginative use of materials and techniques to set off an exhibitor’s display. The quality of the exhibited work itself is not considered.

Theme Award

This award goes to the best exhibit from any division centered on the theme for the Convention. This theme will vary from year to year.

Fan Favorite

All entries will be displayed for fan voting during gaming hours on Sunday.

Judging Criteria

Difficulty

Consideration starts with the casting as a beautifully detailed and well proportioned figure is plainly easier to cope with than one which must be extensively re-worked to bring it up to standard. While intricately painted detail is impressive, the subtle shading of long flowing robes with no detail at all can be equally challenging, and larger figures are often harder to paint than smaller ones.

Creativity

Creativity comes into consideration in the use of original color schemes, free hand designs and other elements painted onto the mini that were not part of the original sculpt, as well as subject, setting, lighting (if any) and the additional factors involved with the miniature(s). For conversions and original sculpts imagination plays an important role, primarily in the selection of subject and pose.

Painting Skill

Painting skill is undoubtedly the single most important criteria. The neatness of detail and the subtlety of shading are important considerations. Painting style is separate from competent technique which is the primary factor to determining if the painting is skillfully done.

Presentation/Overall Effect

The first part of the criteria is straightforward, concerning itself with base, groundwork and any other elements “presenting” the piece. The base and groundwork are not trivial considerations, poor basing and groundwork can undermine a positive impression of the model. Overall Effect is recognition of the intangible aspect of modeling, that “feeling of life” which cannot be traced to any particular element of its construction, but is clearly evident when the piece is viewed as a whole.

UnMatched Double-Elimination Tournament

1v1 Double-Elimination Snake Draft. Players are randomly assigned an order (Between 1 and 6). Starting with player 1, players choose 1 of the available heroes. Once we reach the last entrant in line, the last entrant then chooses a second hero from those remaining, then players continue to choose in the reverse order from the first. (So the player who chose the first hero will choose their second hero last.)

Players are then put into a double elimination bracket. 1 Map is placed at each table/station and players positions are decided at random each round. Players then go to their table to play their match. If it's a double sided map, players may either agree on one, or decide at random. After the match is played, the loser cannot use the character they chose for that match for the rest of the event. Once a player has lost both their characters, they're out of the tournament.

Regular rules for Unmatched are applied. We will provide heroes and maps.

FINALE

Each player will choose a unique fighter line-up from the provided options. First determine who will be Leader and Follower by any means agreed upon (eg. roll a die, flip a coin, gentlemen’s agreement). Leader will begin by choosing any 1 fighter from the existing published Unmatched characters. That fighter cannot be chosen again by any player for this match. Next, Follower will choose a different fighter. This will continue back and forth until both players have 3 unique fighters for their line-up.

Set-up :

  1. Determine who will be Leader and Follower
  2. Choose fighter line-ups:
  3. Ban fighters (Blind pick, meaning both players declare at the same time to each other)
  4. Ban maps (Leader bans first, Follower bans second)

Gameplay:

  1. Both players blind pick 1 of their available fighters to be used for this game
  2. Follower will pick a map to be used out of the available options
  3. Follower also chooses their starting position (1st or 2nd)
  4. After each player draws their starting hand, there is an optional Full Mulligan in which the player may shuffle their entire hand back into their deck and draw back the same number of cards. (Recommended blind declarations of keep/mulligan)
  5. Complete game following official Unmatched rules, except Defender REVEALS First. (This is to avoid issues with an illegal card being played)
  6. The winner will not be allowed to pick the same fighter or map again during this match (Loser may re-select the same fighter/map)
  7. The loser will pick a fighter and map for game 2, as well as starting position
  8. Repeat the same process for game 3 if applicable
